Nguyen (Nathan) Vo received his Honours BSc in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) in 2010 and his PhD in Biology from the University of Waterloo (UW) in 2015. He was awarded the W.B. Pearson Medal from UW for creative doctoral research.
Laurier Alumni Association selected Nathan Vo to be their Young Alumnus of the Year for 2017.
Following his doctorate, he conducted further scientific research at McMaster University, WLU, UW, and the University of Windsor. During those years, he taught a wide range of undergraduate science courses and one graduate science course. He was the recipient of the Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities' Award of Excellence for teaching excellence in 2020.
He has previously provided scientific expertise to two start-up biotechnology companies in the emerging field of cellular agriculture and aquaculture.
In 2021, he conducted community-based research at UW where he studied COVID-19 antibody immunity levels in a campus population and in hospitalized patient cohorts. This project is part of the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force by the Government of Canada.
He has been a full-time faculty member in the Department of Community Health at Laurier Brantford since 2022.
There are two areas of research interests in the Vo Research Group:
Vo's research program focuses on the intersection of cell biology, immunology, and radiation biology. His research aims at addressing current and emerging issues in community and environmental health at the cellular and molecular levels.
Vo is interested in developing different teaching and learning modalities in his in-person and virtual classrooms to:
Dr. Vo supports a number of different positions in his research group. Interested students who wish to gain hands-on laboratory skills are welcome to contact him for available research positions. He enthusiastically welcomes undergraduate students from different academic and personal backgrounds to create conversations and develop research projects with him, especially to enrich their studies with further scientific education and training.
