Admission Requirements

There are no additional program-specific requirements.

French as a Second Language Focus Requirements

You must successfully complete a French-language proficiency assessment administered at Laurier. The assessment will take place in December.

In addition, you must provide evidence of French-language proficiency through one of the following options:

• Completion of five one-semester undergraduate courses (equivalent to 2.5 credits) in French with a 70% average (B-). Of these courses, only two (1.0 credit) may be at the first-year level. In addition, a maximum of two one-semester courses (1.0 credit) in French translation may be counted towards the five courses. It is recommended that applicants present a combination of courses in French language, grammar, composition, literature and culture for admission consideration.
• Completion of one semester-long undergraduate course (equivalent to 0.5 credit) in French at the 300 or 400 level and no French courses completed at the 100 or 200 level. This course must be taught in French. This option is intended for fluent French speakers.
• Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF) level B2.
• University degree completed at Francophone institution.

Teachable Subjects

You need a minimum of one teachable subject to be eligible for the Junior/Intermediate program:

• English
• French as a second language
• First Nations, Inuit, Métis (FNMI)
• Geography
• Health and physical education
• History
• Mathematics
• Music, instrumental (Waterloo campus)
• Music, vocal (Waterloo campus)
• Science, general

Requirements for Teachables

• You must complete all courses required for your teachable subject by the end of December 2026. Any courses you take in the winter term (January to April) will not be considered towards your teaching subject requirements.
  • If you are applying for spring 2028, all courses required for your teachable subject must be completed by September 1 of the year you are applying.
• You must have at least 3.0 full-credits or 6.0 half-credit undergraduate university courses, with an average of 70% (B-) in your chosen teachable.
• You must have at least 1.0 full-credit or 2.0 half-credit courses at the second-year level or above. If you present more than the required number of courses for the subject area, the subject-specific average will be calculated using your highest grades.

You must submit evidence of your English proficiency if you have not studied for a minimum of three years in an English-language institution (including your most recent degree). You must submit a minimum score on an accepted English language test. There are some circumstances in which you may be exempted from submitting a test score.

Minimum English Language Test Scores

You must submit a minimum test score (taken within the last two years) on one of the approved English language tests. Your official test scores must be received by Laurier by the required documents deadline.

Students who are admitted to the program and show an inadequate command of spoken or written English may be required to withdraw from the program.

Applicants to the Junior/Intermediate French teachable or the Primary/Junior French as a Second Language (FSL) focus must complete a mandatory French proficiency assessment as part of the admissions process. The assessment will be conducted in December. 

At least 3.0 full credits in English are required, including at least two 0.5-credit courses in English literature or poetry.

The following courses do not satisfy credit requirements for the English teachable:

• University essay courses
• English remedial courses
• Courses in English culture
• Writing for business or science
• Journalism courses

At least 3.0 full credits in FNIM are required, including:

• 0.5 in Introduction to Indigenous Studies course (or similar). 
• Two more content courses related to knowledge about FNIM people. 
• For Laurier students: 
  • ID120 Introduction to Indigenous Studies OR EM310 Cultural Competency in Teaching: Attending to the TRC’s Calls to Action in the Classroom AND 2.5 credits in Indigenous courses. 
  • Graduates from Laurier's Indigenous Studies program would satisfy admission requirements.

At least 3.0 full credits in French are required, including:

• 1.0 full-credit course in French written language or grammar
• 0.5 credit in French, French Canadian and/or Francophone literature
• 0.5 credit in French, French Canadian and/or Francophone culture

Applicants are required to demonstrate oral and written fluency as part of their application. The assessment will be held in December. 

At least 3.0 full credits in geography are required, including:

• 1.0 full credit in geography (at the 100 or senior level) that includes both human and physical geography
• 0.5 credit senior-level course in GIS, cartography, remote sensing or geotechnologies
• 1.5 senior credits in geography

At least 3.0 full credits in kinesiology, health science or physical education are required, including at least two 0.5-credit courses (or a 1.0 credit equivalent) in fundamental and/or applied movement skills (e.g., sport, games, or movement skills).

At least 3.0 full credits in history are required, including at least 1.0 full credit in Canadian history.

At least 3.0 full credits in mathematics are required, including 1.0 full senior math credit at the second-year level or above.

Statistics courses taken in another subject area other than math (e.g., psychology or sociology) are considered for a maximum of one 0.5 credit towards the teachable requirement.

Mathematics courses equivalent to a high school math credit or remedial courses are not considered for the teachable requirement.

At least 3.0 full credits in music, including both applied and academic music courses. This should include 1.0 credits in music theory, 0.5 credits in conducting, and 1.5 credits in applied music courses.

Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music certification in Instrumental will satisfy the 1.0 credits towards the  applied music requirement.

Only available on the Waterloo campus.

At least 3.0 full credits in music, including both applied and academic music courses. This should include 1.0 credits in music theory, 0.5 credits in conducting, and 1.5 credits in applied music courses.

Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music certification in Instrumental will satisfies the  applied music requirement. 

Only available on the Waterloo campus.

At least 3.0 full credits in science are required, including one 0.5-credit mathematics course.

Your science credits must include one 0.5-credit course in at least three of the following subject areas:

• Biology
• Biochemistry
• Chemistry
• Earth and space science
• Environmental science
• Zoology
• Physics
