Join Dean Kyle Murray and Brian Smith for a candid discussion on Brian’s experience as a finance professor at WLU for nearly 40 years. Reflecting on his career, Brian recounts his favourite stories of alumni, how business education has evolved, and his experience supervising both the Lazaridis Student Investment Fund and Start Up Fund.
The two also discuss the importance of experiential learning and how it has evolved alongside technology, the passion for teaching in post-secondary, and Brian’s plans and advice for retirement.

Brian F. Smith is a Professor of Finance at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Laurier. He has published extensively in the areas of corporate finance and market microstructure with a focus on Canadian capital markets. Brian’s current research focus is on insider trading. His publications include articles in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
In addition to supervising the Laurier Student Investment Fund, Brian currently supervises the Laurier Startup Fund, a student-managed $3.1 million fund focused on early-stage investments in private tech companies. Brian also holds a faculty advisor role on the Laurier Graduate Student Investment Fund board.
