At Wilfrid Laurier University, we are deeply committed to academic freedom, freedom of expression and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome to engage in research, teaching and learning.
In September 2024, Laurier established a Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Task Force to clarify policies, procedures and how the university responds to community concerns related to academic freedom and freedom of expression. The goal is to understand and identify challenges of implementation within the current framework and ensure the university has the resources and processes necessary for supporting freedom of expression and academic freedom. This work builds on the Statement on Freedom of Expression and freedom of expression policy framework established in 2018/19.
Given the mandate of the Task Force, faculty members make up a majority of the membership. The full membership is as follows:
A call for nominations for faculty members was issued the week of Sept. 30 2024 through the University Faculty Council. Nominations included a 100-word candidate statement explaining why the nominee wished to serve on the task force.
The Task Force met twice monthly during the 2024/25 academic year and reported to Senate at the May 2025 meeting.
