Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University mourns the passing of Stephen Jarislowsky, renowned Canadian philanthropist and champion of higher education, who died at the age of 101. Through the Jarislowsky Foundation, he helped establish more than 50 endowed chairs at universities across Canada, shaping academic inquiry and strengthening institutions worldwide.
At Laurier, Jarislowsky's legacy will live on through the Jarislowsky Chair in Sustainable Water Futures, created by a transformational $2-million gift from the foundation and matched to establish a $4-million endowment. The chair supports research addressing climate change, aquatic ecosystem health and sustainable resource management.
Associate Biology Professor Heidi Swanson was appointed the inaugural chairholder in 2022, leading interdisciplinary research and mentoring the next generation of environmental scholars.
“Stephen Jarislowsky knew that investing in research and education was one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change,” said Jason Coolman, Laurier’s vice-president, Advancement and External Relations. “Through the transformational support of the Jarislowsky Foundation, his generosity will continue to have a positive impact through the discoveries, partnerships and future leaders made possible by the Jarislowsky Chair in Sustainable Water Futures at Laurier. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those touched by his remarkable philanthropy.”
Laurier joins communities across Canada in mourning the loss of an extraordinary philanthropist whose commitment to ethics, education and public good helped to shape institutions across the country.
