Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University mourns the passing of Salah Bachir, a philanthropist and a celebrated leader in Canada’s arts and entertainment sectors, and a generous friend of Laurier.
Salah received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Laurier in 2022 in recognition of his remarkable achievements in philanthropy, entrepreneurship, social justice advocacy and support of the arts. Laurier recognized his enduring commitment to fundraising, championing of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, support for healthcare initiatives and his commitment to nurturing Canadian artists through his extensive collection of contemporary art.
Salah’s generosity also had a lasting impact on Laurier’s cultural landscape. In 2023, he donated 42 works of art to the Robert Langen Art Gallery at Laurier. Several pieces from the collection are now displayed in Laurier’s newly renovated Savvas Chamberlain Faculty of Music building, where they continue to inspire students, faculty, staff and visitors.
“Salah understood the power of art and philanthropy to transform lives,” said Jason Coolman, Laurier’s vice-president, Advancement and External Relations. “We are deeply grateful for his friendship and support, and extend our sincere condolences to his husband, family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable generosity and advocacy.”
Laurier joins the many people and organizations across Canada mourning the loss of a visionary philanthropist, arts patron and community builder.
