Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University mourns the passing of Sir George Herbert Beardshaw, an honorary degree recipient at 2026 spring convocation, who died on July 11, 2026, at the age of 102.
George was Canada’s last surviving British Home Child, a Second World War veteran, and steadfast advocate for British Home Children and Canadian Armed Forces members.
Laurier was honoured to present George with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during Brantford campus spring convocation on June 9 in recognition of his extraordinary lifetime of service. During the ceremony, George inspired graduates and guests through his remarkable example of resilience.
“I am overwhelmed to be acknowledged in such a wonderful way,” George said during his address to convocation. “This is definitely the most treasured honour to receive at 102 years of age. Thank you all sincerely. Bless you all.”
Laurier extends its sincere condolences to George’s family, friends, fellow veterans and all who were touched by his life and service. George’s enduring commitment to remembrance leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
