Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Thank you for your interest in joining our innovative study. Your participation is invaluable to our research objectives in understanding how individuals offer service feedback on their smartphones within different contexts.

System Requirements

To download the necessary tools to participate in the study, your phone must run either Android 4.1 and up or iOS 8.0 and up.

Getting Registered

  1. Create a participant account on MetricWire.
  2. Enrol in our study.
  3. Upon enrolment, click the "View Consent Form" button in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Carefully read the consent form and click "I consent." Revisit the consent form by clicking the button at any time.

Setting Up the Study

  1. Download the MetricWire app onto your personal smartphone from the Google Play app store or equivalent distributor.
    • You will not be able to participate in the study with a desktop computer. To reimburse you for transmission of our survey responses, you will receive $10 for data consumption.
  2. In the MetricWire app, click "Settings," then check "Enable Passive Location Tracking."
  3. In your phone's operating system, navigate to your Settings and allow GPS and sound alerts.
    • We understand there are times (e.g. during hours of employment) where your settings are to be turned off; however, if you have not received study notifications, check to ensure your phone settings still allow notifications for MetricWire.
  4. Log in using the same login and password you used to enrol in the study.
  5. To access the SmartSurveys study, click "Available Studies" in the left menu bar, then click SmartSurveys

Study Details on MetricWire

Notifications

The MetricWire app will send you notifications whenever you leave a building containing a service provider of interest (e.g. campus pharmacy). You may receive notifications, but the details of the study and survey will be kept private until you open the MetricWire app.

We have "geofenced" or built virtual boundaries around a number of service providers on campus and around the city that can be detected by your phone. When you spend some time in a geofenced location, suggesting that you have interacted with service providers at that location, the phone will alert the MetricWire app and will send an alert to complete the survey.

If you are just passing by or through a location, the app should not send an alert or attempt to survey you. If you receive an alert and you have not received a service at that location, skip the survey and do not complete the questions.

Study Questions

You will answer a set of questions about your experience within the app (that will take 30 seconds to two minutes to complete). The questions you will answer in the app will ask you to identify your service provider, and provide your perceptions of the services you received.

The questions will be available for you to answer up to 48 hours from the point you exit the building and may be completed either using your smartphone (preferred) or tablet. If you do not answer the questions within a certain amount of time, you will receive a reminder alert.

There will always be an option to skip a question. Make sure you click "Submit Answers" at the end of each survey to make sure your answers are received.

Leaving the Study

You may leave the study at any time. To leave the study, click the "Leave Study" button in the right-hand corner next to the "View Consent Form" button.
