Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music is pleased to welcome Dr. Scott Hanenberg, who will join the faculty as assistant professor of music theory effective July 1, 2026.
Hanenberg is a music theorist specializing in popular music analysis, rhythm and meter, and analytical approaches to groove. His research focuses on how drum-kit patterns shape the perception of irregular meters in popular music.
His work has been published in leading scholarly journals and publications, including Music Theory Spectrum, Music Theory Online and The Cambridge Companion to the Drum Kit. He is also a contributor to the open-access textbook Open Music Theory.
Hanenberg grew up in Erin, Ontario, performing guitar in rock, jazz and musical theatre ensembles. He studied music at Queen’s University and sound recording at Recording Arts Canada before completing his doctorate in music theory at the University of Toronto.
Hanenberg brings extensive post-secondary teaching experience across undergraduate and graduate curricula, having taught at institutions including The Pennsylvania State University, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Virginia Tech. His teaching emphasizes accessible approaches to music theory through popular music and interdisciplinary perspectives. His work also reflects a strong commitment to student mentorship, collaborative research, and equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives within the field.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Laurier’s Faculty of Music and becoming part of such a creative and collaborative community,” said Hanenberg. “I look forward to working with students and colleagues who are passionate about exploring music from a wide range of perspectives and experiences.”
“Scott brings scholarly excellence, innovative pedagogy and deep musical curiosity to Laurier,” said Dean Cynthia Johnston Turner. “His expertise in popular music studies and contemporary music theory will be an incredible asset to our students and faculty community.”
Hanenberg’s appointment further strengthens Laurier’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to engage with diverse musical traditions, contemporary scholarship and interdisciplinary creative practices.
