Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

What is User Experience Design?

User experience (UX) designers are trained professionals who understand how to ensure that the entire experience a person has with a product, service, environment or message is a positive one. UX designers employ a wide range of methods for:

  • Gathering information about users and their tasks;
  • Analyzing user needs;
  • Creating design solutions;
  • Iterating designs through testing and evaluation; and
  • Measuring efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction.

UX professionals are in high demand and have been ranked among the top 10 best jobs. This is likely due to the fact that UX professionals are valuable in a wide range of industries including retail, medicine, technology, finance, education and government.

About User Experience Design at Laurier

Laurier’s approach to UX goes beyond designing for the web and extends UX to the design of 3D and immersive environments, as well as the design of processes and services.

In our Bachelor of Design (BDes) in User Experience Design program, you'll gain hands-on experience in labs and studio environments where you will apply your knowledge to real-world design challenges. All of this is available at our Brantford campus, taught by experienced faculty.

Interested students can apply to participate in co-op and complete their degree in five years while gaining practical work experience. Students in co-op complete their work term during fourth year and return to campus for year five.

Competing Virtually - UX Design for Change

The User Experience Design (BDes) program offers you the opportunity to work with real-world design challenges and real clients; one such opportunity is through the UX Design for Change competition. This four-week competition, hosted by Laurier, challenges students from across the country to tackle climate change by designing solutions to change social behaviour toward greener and more sustainable practices.

"The thing I enjoy most about this program is being able to apply what I know with amazing opportunities both in classroom and outside of it. I love how what we learn can be applied to anything we’re passionate about. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to take a design approach to solve complex problems from various industries and sectors."
