Laurier's new Brantford campus lecture series launches Sept. 22 with a celebration of Dolly Parton’s legacy

BRANTFORD – Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus is launching a new community-focused lecture series with a discussion inspired by the life and legacy of Dolly Parton, exploring how one of the world’s most beloved entertainers continues to offer lessons in happiness, purpose and human connection.

Hawk Talk and Trivia Night invites community members, alumni, students, faculty and staff to come out for an evening of learning, conversation and fun.

The first event will take place Sept. 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Belmont restaurant and café at One Market (1 Market St.). The evening will feature a public lecture by Judy Eaton, a psychology professor at Laurier’s Brantford campus, followed by a friendly pop culture trivia competition. 

Eaton’s talk, “Dolly’s Legacy of Love,” will examine how the beloved singer-songwriter’s life, work and lyrics offer a psychologically rich example of how to live with authenticity, integrity and compassion.

“At a time when doom and gloom dominate the headlines, Parton’s optimism might be more important than ever,” said Eaton. “Maybe more of us should be asking, ‘What would Dolly do?’”

A professor of psychology at Laurier’s Brantford campus for more than 20 years, Eaton’s research focuses on apologies, forgiveness and well-being. Her work has been featured in media outlets including Time, Esquire, NBC News, CBC News, Popular Science, Psychology Today and Smithsonian Magazine.

The new lecture series aims to offer accessible, intellectually engaging experiences beyond traditional classroom settings, while strengthening connections between the university and broader community. 

“Hawk Talk and Trivia Night creates opportunities for people to connect with Laurier in a relaxed and welcoming environment,” said Tarah Brookfield, dean of Laurier’s Faculty of Human and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Liberal Arts. “We’re excited to bring together students, local residents, alumni and employees to learn something new, meet new people and experience our campus as a hub for community engagement and lifelong learning.” 

Following the lecture, guests will be invited to put their knowledge to the test and compete for prizes during a pop culture trivia challenge. 

Those interested in attending are encouraged to register in advance as space is limited. The event includes complimentary snacks and a cash bar.

The Hawk Talk and Trivia Night series will continue throughout the fall. On Oct. 27, Andrew Welsh, associate professor in the Department of Criminology, will explore how horror films reflect the societies that produce them. On Dec. 1, James Cairns, professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts, will discuss responses to contemporary challenges facing democracy.
