Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Study Youth and Children's Studies at Laurier

We recognize your academic achievement and there's a place here for you at Laurier. That's why we've offered you admission to the Honours Youth and Children's Studies program.

Our Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Youth and Children’s Studies explores the question "What does it mean to be a child in the contemporary world?" and uses it as the basis for exploration into the cultures of childhood and adolescence. If you are wondering how you can engage with children and youth to make a positive change, Youth and Children's Studies will give you information, research strategies and analytical skills to succeed.

You’ll graduate with a range of skills that will help you approach contemporary social, cultural, educational, legal and health issues that face children and those who work with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Review our frequently asked questions to learn more about the wait list process and to help you plan your next steps.

What is a Wait List?

"Wait list" is short for "waiting list." Students who are placed on a wait list may receive an offer of admission to the Social Work (BSW) program if space becomes available.

Laurier uses wait lists to ensure specific enrolment numbers for competitive programs. Due to a high number of strong applicants, Laurier must monitor admission to these programs very carefully.

If space is available in the program after the June 1 confirmation deadline, Laurier will issue additional offers to the BSW program to select candidates from the wait list.

Why am I on the Wait List?

Wait lists are used to ensure programs are not over-enrolled and to ensure the most qualified applicants are accepted. You have been placed on the wait list because you applied after the application deadline and space in this program is very limited.

If you received notice that you have been placed on the wait list for the BSW program, this means you also received an offer to the Honours Youth & Children's Studies program.

Can I Find Out My Place on the Wait List?

Laurier is not able to confirm an applicant’s place on the wait list because this information changes frequently.

Laurier also does not disclose wait list information because we cannot confirm how many candidates will be selected from the wait list.

Can I Take Summer School Courses to Upgrade?

If Laurier is able to issue offers of admission to wait-listed applicants, we will begin doing so immediately following the June 1 confirmation deadline. Therefore, we are not able to consider summer school courses.

When Will I Find Out If I Am Selected From the Wait List?

We will notify all wait-listed applicants of their status after June 1, 2022. The last date you could hear from us is Aug. 1, 2022.

How Will I Be Notified?

We will notify you by email if you are selected from the wait list. Please ensure your contact information is up to date in your applicant portal account. We will email students who were not selected from the wait list when the program becomes full. The last date you could hear from us is Aug. 1, 2022.

What Happens If I Am Not Selected From the Wait List?

If you are not selected for admission to the BSW program and you have accepted your alternate offer, you will enrol in the Youth & Children's Studies program.

If I am Selected From the Wait List, Can I Still Keep My Alternate Offer?

It is your decision to choose which program you would like to accept. You can decide to accept your offer to the BSW program or keep your alternate offer to Youth & Children's Studies.

If you do not accept your new offer, you will be removed from the wait list and will not be re-added.

If I Do Not Accept My Alternate Offer to Laurier, Will I Still Be Notified If I Receive an Offer to the BSW Program?

Yes, you will be notified regardless of whether or not you accept your alternate offer to Laurier's Youth & Children's Studies program.

If you accept another institution’s offer of admission and choose to accept your offer to the BSW program, you will have to cancel your registration at the other institution. Before you cancel your registration, you should familiarize yourself with their cancellation policies.

Please note that space in Laurier’s residences will be limited after June 1 and is not guaranteed.

Should I Apply to Live in Residence?

If you plan to attend Laurier and live in residence, you should accept your current offer of admission and submit your residence application by the June 1 deadline to secure your residence spot. This way, if your program changes after June 1, you will be guaranteed your spot in residence.

Laurier guarantees residence to all incoming first-year students who are attending a postsecondary institution for the first time. To receive a guaranteed spot in residence, you will need to submit a $600 non-refundable deposit and completed application by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on June 1, 2022.
