During my master's degree research I met the wife of a sex offender who was part of my study. She said, "No one ever asked me what it was like for me, what it was like when my husband was arrested and went to prison. I wish someone had asked me." It was then that the light bulb went off for me and I believe that I am the first academic in Canada to study the effect of prisons on the family members. The Canadian system is so different than the American prison system or anywhere else, due to geography. There are only 35 prisons across Canada, so if you have a greater than two year sentence, you won’t be close to home, close to your family. Criminals are not different from anyone else.
