Print | PDFIn partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University and the Faculty of Music, The Beckett School at Laurier is so excited to announce our Music and Wellness Month happening throughout the month of January.
There has been an outpouring of support among faculty, staff, and our musical community for programming that cultivates wellness and examines music’s role in sustaining that wellness as we continue to process the ongoing effects of the pandemic. We are so excited to offer this programming to you.
Programs are drop-in unless otherwise stated.
Registration required. Come out to a fun and relaxing paint night led by Lily Sors! No visual arts experience necessary (in fact, we encourage beginners!). Materials will be provided.
Registration required. Carol Bauman invites children aged 3-4 to experience the joy of learning music through moving to music. We will use Dalcroze inspired listening games, songs, and movement exercises to discover tempo and beat, pitch and melody, dynamics and nuance. Children slowly build relationships between space, time, and energy in this rhythmic and social environment.
Children should wear comfortable clothes and will be asked to be barefoot during class.
A regular class schedule will begin in February for those interested in continuing these classes.
Registration required. This workshop is open to music teachers who want to creatively and effectively help their students cope with performance anxiety. Daniel Ramjattan completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Toronto in August 2022, with his dissertation focusing on music performance anxiety in classical guitarists, and received a senior doctoral fellowship from New College for his research in 2021-2022.
Registration required. Body Mapping provides a universal language for all musicians, building a firm somatic* foundation upon which to build (and teach) musical technique. This workshop with Kimberly Barber (licensed Body Mapping Educator since 2015) offers the foundations for this work over two 1-hour sessions that will introduce the concepts of balance and inclusive awareness (hour one) and breath and integrating the arm structure (hour one). No prior experience or knowledge of somatic practices is necessary.
*somatic: pertaining to the body; refers to embodied, integrated and anatomically informed practice.
Come out and participate in a ukulele jam circle with us! Bring your own ukulele or borrow one from us (limited instruments available). We will play, sing, dance, and have a wonderful time making music together. This is for all ages (yes, adults too!).
Dan Cabena cordially invites you to join with him in a few one-hour sessions of enchanting chanting! Each session will begin with a breathing, singing & sensory warm-up, informed by the principles of the Alexander Technique (in which Dan is a teacher-trainee). Then we will sing together, exploring the tradition of western plainchant, with its beautiful modes & meditative melodies. Some of our chanting may be in Latin, but we will also sing our way into these enchanting chants using English poetry and words of our own devising.
