I found my home at Laurier Brantford in 2012 and am very excited to be part of the growth and development of this vibrant, interdisciplinary and collaborative community. I spent most of my childhood and early adulthood in and around Edmonton, Alberta, where I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Alberta. In 2002, I made my way to beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia where I spent 10 years completing my graduate degrees (MA and PhD) and my post-doctoral work.
I take an interdisciplinary approach to the study of children and youth. Broadly, I am interested in studying how children and adolescents develop cognitively and socio-emotionally as they interact and socialize using various technologies. With this in mind, my primary area of research focus has been in the area of cyberbullying and responsible Internet use. Key to my research, teaching and learning philosophies is my desire to connect academia with the community. In this vein, I strive to ensure my research informs the work I do with the community, while simultaneously allowing my work with the community to inform my research and teaching.
The best part of my job is interacting with students and helping them to reach their desired goals. To successfully provide opportunities for growth, I have developed the Child and Adolescent Research and Education (CARE) Lab. Through CARE, students have the opportunity to participate in research projects, attend conferences, learn about different theories and research methods, and/or give talks and presentations to children, youth and the community.
I am also available for thesis/dissertation supervision and welcome students who are willing to explore the social and emotional development of children, youth and emerging adults as part of their graduate work.
