I am an Assistant Professor of Arts Education in the Faculty of Education. Prior to joining Laurier, I served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor. I received a PhD in Educational Studies (Music Education) from the University of Windsor (2015), as well as a Performance Diploma (2008), Master of Music (2007), and Bachelor of Music (2005) in Violin Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. I also serve as the Lead String Specialist for the Royal Conservatory of Music College of Examiners and perform as a violinist with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
My work as a performer, pedagogue, and scholar centers on music education, arts education, and preservice teacher education. I was awarded a $70,000 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant and have developed undergraduate and graduate music courses at both Western University and Wilfrid Laurier University. Most recently, I designed new offerings for the University of Windsor Faculty of Education, including three Additional Qualification courses in Instrumental Music (Strings) for elementary and secondary educators across Ontario.
My recent research was supported by a $70,000 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant, which examined social-emotional learning (SEL), self-efficacy, belonging, social integration, and teamwork within a community music program. Building on this work, my current research focuses on the experiences of primary-junior (K–6) generalist teacher candidates, with particular attention to emotionally responsive pedagogy, identity development, and well-being across teacher education programs and the transition into early career teaching.
