Being a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.
I hold a BA in Geography from Concordia University, an MA in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research, and an MPhil and PhD in Anthropology from Rutgers University. Prior to coming to Laurier, I taught at Simon Fraser University, McGill University, and Concordia University.
Research Interests / Ongoing Projects
My research interests include media history (film, radio, television) and nonverbal communication. My current research involves examining the Canadian contribution to the history of communications; looking at live performing arts events broadcast globally into movie theatres; and assessing media representations of island survivor narratives from Robinson Crusoe to Life of Pi to The Martian.
Awards and Achievements
I currently co-hold a three-year SSHRC Insight Grant for a project titled, Patterns that Connect: Re-Curating Edmund Carpenter’s Anthropological Media Studies (with Michael Darruch and Janine Marchessault).
Student Opportunities / Supervising
During my various stops at Simon Fraser, McGill, Concordia, and Western Sydney universities, plus 15 years at Wilfrid Laurier University, I have supervised or been on the committees of numerous MA and PhD students. Although I am now a retired emeritus professor, I remain active in teaching and supervising graduate students.
