One of my favourite things about working in the academic environment of Laurier is the encouragement of lifelong learning for employees. While working at the Brantford campus full-time over the past four-and-a-half years, I’ve had the opportunity to complete two undergraduate degrees and am currently working on a part-time Master of Arts degree. Furthering my education while working at the university encourages me to better understand the governance processes of the university, take interest in the collaboration of academics and administration, and be aware of the wide array of student services available on campus. This not only assists me as a staff member and student, but also provides me with the knowledge to help others in the university community. Through taking classes, I have also gained a deep appreciation for the talented faculty members that teach at the university.
Laurier is a unique and supportive environment in that it encourages employees to give back to and be engaged with our communities. Over lunch hours at the Brantford campus, groups of Laurier employees occasionally walk to the local Food Bank to assist in sorting and packaging food donations.
The partnerships at the Brantford campus with the YMCA, library, police service and other businesses encourage involvement with the downtown neighbourhood. Fundraising campaigns allow those that wish to donate financially to provide support to others in need. This communal environment that Laurier fosters inspires me to use my talents to benefit my communities.
Over the last couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to sit on a Board of Directors for a local women’s sports team and to lead a sub-committee within a growing humanitarian organization; both of these leadership roles exemplify the skills I’ve learned through my time at Laurier and the encouragement I’ve received to participate in community activities.
Working at Laurier has provided me with many skills and experiences that I may not have otherwise gained, and I enjoy the opportunity to be involved in a variety of tasks and projects. No two days are exactly the same, and daily I find myself drafting high-level documents, planning campus events, managing the budget, or attending meetings. Through the diversity in tasks, I am constantly learning and adapting, and I greatly appreciate the skills, knowledge and abilities that I have gained. I am always looking forward to the next challenge that I can tackle.
