Message to the Class of 2021

Congratulations graduands! I am so glad that you and your loved ones could join us to celebrate virtually and recognize your years of hard work.

When you began your studies, no one could have predicted we would be celebrating in this way.

That you have successfully continued with your studies through this time of uncertainty and upheaval is a significant feat and needs to be recognized.

You are a graduating class that will stand out as unique in Laurier’s history for your perseverance and tenacity and adaptability to change.

I am so very proud of you, and I know that your families and friends are as well.

As far as life milestones go, this is one of the big ones, whether this is your first university degree or you have pursued graduate studies with us.

In your years at Laurier, you have gained knowledge, but more importantly, you have learned to think critically, and work collaboratively, skills that the world needs right now.

The last year has fundamentally shifted the way we work, learn, and connect with each other. Our society is on the cusp of significant change, with you as the generation to lead it.

This is your time to pursue big ideas and dreams and lead lives of purpose. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible!

You’ve already proven your resilience and adaptability. You have more education, technology, and inter-cultural understanding than any previous generation.

In short, I am confident that anything you set your mind to, you will be able to achieve!

Congratulations once again and welcome to the Laurier alumni community of more than 110,000 graduates!

There are brighter days ahead. I am looking forward to celebrating with you and your loved ones in-person when it is safe to do so.

In the meantime, I look forward to hearing about all the successes the class of 2021 will enjoy.
