Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Sustainability is a universal concept of economic, ecological and social importance. Today’s climate of environmental challenges demand an ever-evolving approach to raise awareness and inspire action to create a more sustainable future. Laurier’s Sustainability Office is committed to this mission. Through projects that span operations, education and community partnerships, our goal is to create a culture where sustainability is embedded into university life.

Our Story

Created by students and for students, the Sustainability Office officially opened in 2010 following a successful 2009 referendum. Since then, our team has grown to three full-time positions supported by passionate Laurier student employees.

Vision

Continue Laurier's transformation into an institution that integrates sustainability practices into all areas of the university. We aim to inspire, educate and equip students, faculty and staff to engage others in the same practices.

Mission

Create and foster a culture of sustainability by engaging, promoting and coordinating action with all stakeholders, developing an environmentally proactive Laurier community.

Objectives

The Sustainability Office promotes strategic objectives that foster a sustainably-minded campus community, including:

  • Create and advance partnerships in the university and the greater community to share, cultivate and form sustainable programs.
  • Support the development of academic programs and research at Laurier that give attention to proactive sustainability.
  • Develop and support policies and practices that contribute to sustainable operations and resource utilization at Laurier.
  • Organize events and utilize communication channels to increase awareness and convey the mission of the Sustainability Office.
  • Consider the pillars of sustainability – economic, social, cultural and environmental – in all decision making processes.
