Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Jessie Chao (BSW '19)

My time at Laurier has been full of great memories and endless opportunities. The people I have met here and experiences I have obtained helped shape who I am today. Laurier is a very close knitted community with lots of school spirit. Everyone is very friendly and I am very proud to be a Laurier Golden Hawk.

"This program is not like any other program. It provides opportunities for students where they can set themselves up into positions where they can succeed. For example, students can gain knowledge in the field of social work, develop a professional self, personal development, networking, hands-on experiences (two field placements).

"Throughout this whole process you are not alone. You will have the opportunity to meet professors and staff members in the program who not only truly care about your academic success but your well-being as a student. There is a whole team of staff there supporting you, if you need it.

"Practice courses allowed me to gain an overall understanding of how to work with each population. The field placements allowed me to bridge the different social work theories and practice together.

"Professors are innovative in their teaching styles, they truly care about their students’ well-being as well as their academic success."

Dayna (BSW '17)

"Wilfrid Laurier University’s BSW program sparked my passion for social work and love of social justice. My experiences throughout the four years were filled with engaging professors, and dedicated faculty who created a rich learning environment within the classroom and field placement setting.

"It was upon entering my first year of the program that I developed a strong understanding of social welfare policies and their integral role in the lives of Canadians. The interactive classroom settings were engaging and developed group discussion that furthered my learning and knowledge. The vast experiences of professors in the field added value to the classroom as they often shared their experiences and furthered our knowledge of concepts.

"As I continued to learn about other concepts in my consequent years, my desire to further my learning in the field continued. I strongly believe that my experiences throughout the four years were a major stepping-stone leading to my life long love of social work practice. The motivation and support of the BSW faculty pushed me to pursue my MSW degree, and for that I am grateful. Upon graduation I was fully equipped with the tools required to succeed in a master's-level program. It was an honour being the first graduating class of Laurier’s BSW program."

"The courses I have taken during my BSW have taught me the theoretical principles of social work and how to transfer them into practice. Exposure to field placements provided me the opportunity to gain necessary experience to advance my academic and professional goals in relation to social work. Through this experience I was able to connect with vulnerable people and learn how to effectively advocate for social justice and equality."

"A degree in Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University is providing me with many transferable skills. When I applied to this program, I was fairly certain of my career goals. As I became more immersed in the program, it was staggering to learn of the multiple career opportunities that were available to me with this degree.

"The professors have great knowledge of the content they are teaching and have diverse experiences that lead to enthusiastic conversations. Critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills are competencies that are encouraged and developed by our professors. The Social Work department has a personal interest in the success of their students and are committed to delivering an up to date and relevant curriculum. This program, and the placement opportunities are giving me the skills needed to be a positive resource in my future employment."
