Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Labour Studies and Career Development (BA)

Our program provides a unique and broadly based investigation of the historical and contemporary dimensions of the experience of work and the developing terrain of employment in Canada and the globalized world. You will gain an understanding of the rapidly changing world of work through courses on the following topics:

  • innovative work arrangements
  • conflict resolution
  • global labour issues
  • labour history
  • collective bargaining
  • employment law
  • work-life balance
  • disabilities studies
  • occupational health and safety
  • workplace diversity

You are encouraged to consider how the arrangements and contexts of work and practices within workplaces can further leverage social inclusion, diversity and the development of the whole person.

Degree and Certificate in Four Years

You can take the full, four-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) program, or you can choose to take the BA in Labour Studies and Career Development in combination with one of two graduate certificates from Conestoga College: Human Resources Management or Career Development Professional. If you pursue this route, you'll take courses for the Conestoga certificate program in third, in classrooms on Laurier’s Brantford campus. In just four years, you can earn both a Laurier honours BA degree and a Conestoga graduate certificate. The Human Resources Management program provides you with all of the required educational components to become a Certified Human Resources Professional.
