The University of Sussex is a leading research-intensive university near Brighton, in the South East of the UK Surrounded by the South Downs National Park, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces. The University of Sussex has more than 17,000 students. About 24% of the student body are overseas students – including more than 100 Canadian LLB students – with more than 100 different nationalities represented.

Law at Sussex

Sussex Law School is one of the most successful and vibrant in the UK. Ranked in the Top 100 worldwide (World University Rankings 2019), it houses award-winning teachers and is a leading research intensive institution. Students explore law in its political, social, economic and cultural contexts, allowing them to understand yet question and challenge current legal theory.

Experiential Opportunities

Once at Sussex you can get involved in legal competitions to develop legal practice skills, giving you the opportunity to boost your employability and network with law firms. You can take part in these competitions in all stages of your studies. Sussex runs a range of contests, including:

  • negotiation
  • client interviewing
  • criminal advocacy
  • mooting

By taking part in these Sussex-run events, you will gain valuable experience and enhance your skills before competing at national and international levels. Sussex law students have a strong history of success in various mooting competitions in the UK and internationally.

Sussex Clinical Legal Education 

The program’s range of clinical legal work also will allow you to use your developing expertise in the real world. Sussex Clinical Legal Education has links to a variety of not-for-profit legal projects and offers you the opportunity to expand your education and skills in a practical way. Some of the current legal projects include:

  • Migration Law Clinic
  • Criminal Justice Law Clinic
  • Family Law Clinic
  • Employment Law Clinic

Housing

Sussex offers 12 varied housing options to choose from, both on and off campus. In your first year, you are guaranteed university-managed housing. All rooms are single occupancy, providing you with your own space to relax and study. About 45% of accommodations offer ensuite rooms, with the rest sharing bathroom facilities.

For your second and third years you will move off campus to the lively city of Brighton.

Brighton

It is no surprise that students love the University of Sussex’s location. Brighton is one of the most vibrant and young cities in the UK. The city organizes countless festivals during the year, including Brighton Festival, Fringe Festival, Pride and The Great Escape (the largest new Music Festival in Europe).
