Everyone with a love for hymnody and singing is invited to a special evening to explore the social-historical context of a collection of hymns, and to analyze various tunes and texts.
Singing Faith in Community - The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology is to take place in Waterloo Lutheran Seminary’s Keffer Chapel from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9.
The program will include congregational singing and brief talks by scholars of hymnody from various Christian traditions. Music will be provided by members of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. The event will also feature an introduction to the online information resource called The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnody, which has recently been made available to the university community.
"The event is the second in a series which began last year with an exploration of global hymnody," says Debbie Lou Ludolph, one of the event’s organizers and director of the seminary’s Kanata Centre for Worship and Global Song.
“Singing Faith in Community is a series that celebrates the collaboration of the Kanata Centre with ecumenically minded musicians and scholars to support congregational song,” Ludolph says. “Following the success of last year's event, we will follow a similar talking-and-singing format as we highlight the work of local contributors to this new online resource.”
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Singing Faith in Community is organized by the seminary’s Kanata Centre, the Wilfrid Laurier University Library, the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and the Southern Ontario Chapter of the Hymn Society.
