WATERLOO – Education Minister Liz Sandals unveiled Ontario’s new sexual-education curriculum February 23, representing the first time courses have been updated since 1998.

The following Laurier experts have conducted research in different areas relating to sexual health and education:

Vanessa Oliver, assistant professor, Youth and Children’s Studies.

  • Area of expertise: Sexual health. Oliver worked as a consultant with the provincial government on the new curriculum. She has also previously worked with the Laurier-Nipissing Concurrent Education program to help prepare our teacher candidates to teach sex education.

Eileen Wood, professor, Psychology.

  • Area of expertise: learning in the classroom, sex-role socialization, dating relationships, and sex education.

Danielle Law, assistant professor of Youth and Children’s Studies and Psychology.

  • Area of expertise: Law is engaging Laurier students and community members in her work to understand and prevent cyberbullying.

Robb Travers, associate professor, Health Sciences and Psychology.

  • Area of expertise: the impact of homophobia and transphobia on the well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth; issues facing LGBT immigrants, refugees and undocumented individuals to Canada; the impact of HIV-related stigma on well-being and broader health outcomes.
