Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

LAUNCH is an accelerated, problem-based camp for children in grades 4-8 as of September 2020. LAUNCH is designed for those students who are looking for more of a challenge to reach their full potential – the pace is much faster, the expectations for self-direction are much higher and the concepts are more advanced. Our programs are led by certified teachers and are carefully developed to be high quality learning experiences.

Our campers:

  • Are working more than three grade levels above his/her grade (documentation* required).
  • Are self-directed learners.
  • Have deep knowledge in several different topics.
  • Are able to consider a problem situation from many diverse perspectives.

Twice-exceptional learners are also welcome to apply. We welcome children from the homeschool community.

*Documentation consists of a psychoeducational assessment, an IPRC recommendation for gifted services or the completion of the supplemental application survey.

Robotics and the Future of Society

By Kevin Watt

Robots make cars. They write news articles. SWAT sends them in to deactivate bombs. Robots perform surgeries that are too delicate for a frail human surgeon's hands, and they clean our houses. What comes next? Will robots teach kindergarten? Change diapers? Will robots automatically update our social media profiles? Will they drive our cars, fly our airplanes, and repair them when they break down?

The theme of this session’s LAUNCH camp is "Robotics and the Future of Society." Campers will investigate the impact of robotics, algorithms and artificial intelligence on work, the health care sector, and social interaction. They will use programming, lego robotics, and micro:bits to model the ways that robotics and AI influence our world.

Eligibility Process

If your child has not attended LAUNCH before and you believe they would be a good fit for the program, submit at least one of the following documents to launch@wlu.ca:

If you have any questions regarding application and/or eligibility, email launch@wlu.ca.

The camp is limited to the first 15 qualified campers who apply. We place a lower limit on the size of a LAUNCH camp because each camper may be thinking on a wavelength unique to him/her. This requires the teacher to prepare multiple different lessons each day to allow students to have an individualized experience. Our limited camp size ensures the experience is fulfilling for everyone. Please see LAUNCH Policies and Conditions for more information.
