Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

LAUNCH is an accelerated, problem-based camp for children in grades 4-8 as of September 2018. LAUNCH is designed for those students who are looking for more of a challenge to reach their full potential — the pace is much faster, the expectations for self-direction are much higher and the concepts are more advanced. Our programs are led by certified teachers and are carefully developed to be high quality learning experiences.

Our campers:

  • Are working more than three grade levels above his/her grade (documentation* required).
  • Are self-directed learners.
  • Have deep knowledge in several different topics.
  • Are able to consider a problem situation from many diverse perspectives.

Twice-exceptional learners are also welcome to apply. We welcome children from the homeschool community.

*Documentation consists of a psychoeducational assessment, an IPRC recommendation for gifted services or the completion of the supplemental application survey.

2018 Camp Description

  • Date: July 9-13, 2018
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Artificial Intelligence, Automated Technology and the Future

By Kevin Watt

Technology pervades our lives. Customer service bots, order pickers in warehouses, self-driving cars: more and more of society is becoming automated and ruled by artificial intelligence. What are the implications of this for our society?

The theme of this year's LAUNCH camp is automated technology. Through a series of researched Socratic seminars, campers will investigate and discuss the consequences of automation on the economy, transportation, home automation, employment and social connections.

Campers will delve into real-life applications of these concepts. They will have the opportunity to investigate the ability to determine whether a bot is a human or a computer and will program their own basic chatbots to see how they are made in real life. Ethical issues around automated cars will be investigated and students will create their own self-driving cars using Lego robotics. These hands-on activities will give them a flavour for how these applications are actually built and the complexity of their inner workings.

Join us in our exploration of the impact of automation technology and artificial intelligence on our personal lives and our community.

Registration Process

The registration deadline is May 28, 2018.

Before registering, please read the LAUNCH camp Policies and Conditions.

If your child has attended LAUNCH before, or if you have applied as outlined above and have been accepted as eligible, proceed with the two-part online registration process:

  1. Pay via credit card through Course Store.
    • Your child's space will be confirmed immediately once payment is received. If you prefer to pay by cash or cheque, you will need to drop it off or mail it to us. Note: Your camper's registration is not confirmed or held until payment is received and some camps do fill up quickly.
  2. Complete the LAUNCH Registration Form.
    • Note: Filling out this form without completing step one does not hold a spot for your camper. If you require a hard copy of the registration form, email

The camp is limited to the first 15 qualified campers who apply. We place a lower limit on the size of a LAUNCH camp because each camper may be thinking on a wavelength unique to him/her. This requires the teacher to prepare multiple different lessons each day to allow students to have an individualized experience. Our limited camp size ensures the experience is fulfilling for everyone.
