5 Ways to Prepare for a Virtual Fall

1. Take an Online Course for a Test Drive

For many, this will be the first time you're taking an online course. Before fall rolls around, get use to what online learning is like. Whether you're looking to prepare for your program, need to boost your health and wellness, or are simply looking to combat cabin fever – there are a number of free classes that will help you prepare for online course delivery.

  • TriAGe: Be prepared for an entry-level university calculus course by reinforcing fundamental skills in Trigonometry, Algebra and Geometry.
  • Essential Self-Care and Resilience: Take some time for yourself and support your positive mental well-being. 
  • Lifelong Learning at Home: Enjoy this weekly series with pre-recorded lectures from some well-known Laurier faculty and community experts.

2. Sourcing Software

Having the right software on your computer is key to a seamless online course experience. Before your first day of class, get set up with essential software, free of charge to all Laurier students.

  • Online courses often require you to use Zoom Communications web-conferencing. Check out our guide to get started with zoom using your @mylaurier.ca account.
  • Download Microsoft Office 365 and get the latest version of the full Office productivity suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and one TB of storage through OneDrive for Business.

3. Stay Connected

At Laurier, we are a community first – both in person and online. Laurier’s Off-Campus University Students group (LOCUS) have created a thriving online community to stay connected while #LaurierStaysatHome. Follow LOCUS Brantford and LOCUS Waterloo on Instagram for upcoming events and activities available to all Laurier students.

Whether your into virtual trivia or are looking for peers to chat with during a movie – there is an online community waiting to welcome you.

4. Study Strategies for Success

So, you don't have to stress about where your class is physically located, but you’ll still need to know how to navigate the virtual learning environment before your first lecture.

With the a series of virtual events and the exclusive Laurier Life platform, you can connect with future classmates, experience a mock lecture, and learn about the people, services and resources dedicated to helping you develop your study skills and providing academic course support throughout your degree.
