Third-year Music Performance
Hong Kong, China
Hello future golden hawks!
My name is Denise Fung and I am a third-year Music student who plays the harp. I am from Hong Kong and I came here two years ago by myself. I am lucky to say that after two years in Canada, Laurier has become my home. This is my first year as a Campus Ambassador and I am more than excited to share my experience with you and make Laurier your home as well.
Coming to Canada is a huge decision for me and the hardest part is saying goodbye to my family and friends back in Hong Kong. I remembered landing in Canada after a 15 hour flight, not knowing how Laurier looks like apart from pictures on the internet. Language barrier was also a huge challenge for me at that time. I was frustrated and terrified until I arrived to Laurier and met one of the campus ambassadors. She showed me around campus and made me felt like home and all of the challenges I thought I would have went away. The friendly and caring environment here confirmed the reason why I chose Laurier.
There are many things I love about Laurier, and having a close community is one of the top reasons. We have a small campus and a close relationship between students and the faculty. Our professors have regular office hours, and they are always more than happy to provide help.
I am going into my third year, and I would say I never regretted being a Golden Hawk. Laurier offers lots of great opportunities to get involved. In first year I was part of a unique floor where everyone had interest in music. I then got involved with Access U Laurier, and an icebreaker for Orientation Week. This year, apart from a Laurier Ambassador, I am also part of the Clubs and Association Governance Committee team. Through the music faculty, I have been part of Faculty of Music Student Association and Music Therapy Student Association in which we plan events and opportunities for other music students to get involved. To me, getting involved is one of the best things to add to your four years of university, as you get to meet lots of people outside our friend group. It’s almost like stepping out of your comfort zone to achieve something even greater.
Laurier strikes the perfect balance between academic, school spirit and a welcoming atmosphere. What’s more convincing is that Laurier ranked number one in student satisfaction. Choosing between universities is overwhelming, but I ensure you that if you choose Laurier you will not regret it.
I wish you best of luck in choosing universities, and I hope to see you around on campus. Stay golden, friends!
