Join us at Laurier

Being a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Wilfrid Laurier University is one of Canada’s finest undergraduate universities.

We’ve been in the business of creating leaders in every industry for more than 100 years. We offer an extensive selection of programs at both the Waterloo and Brantford campuses that are very flexible. We offer double degree opportunities, major and minor combinations, options to enhance your degree, and partnerships with other universities and colleges to combine your schooling and training.

Location, Location, Location

Laurier’s campuses are located in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province and home to Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, and Toronto, the largest city in Canada and one of the largest cities in North America. We have campuses in the Waterloo Region (KW) and Brantford, which are only 50 minutes away from each other by car, and an office in Toronto. Located at the heart of southwestern Ontario, our campuses are also close to the United States’ border, and international airports, including Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Hamilton International Airport and Waterloo Region International Airport.

Explore Ontario

Campus life happens off campus, too. The Laurier International office offers you opportunities to travel across Ontario to Niagara Falls and amusement parks like Canada’s Wonderland, as well as participate in camping trips with friends and classmates.

Experiential Learning

Laurier is a university with a strong focus on student engagement, both inside and outside the classroom. Our professors are dedicated and approachable people who genuinely care about their students. In national surveys, we consistently receive top marks for our services to students, because your wellbeing, quality of life, safety, enjoyment and success are important to us.

The Co-op Advantage

Students who are admitted to co-op complete work terms that provide them with the opportunity to develop valuable contacts, gain self-confidence and create opportunities for employment after graduation.

Student Clubs

There are more than 200 clubs and associations across our campuses, bringing like-minded people together to share their passion for anything from arts and business, to religion and culture. The best part is you can also create your own club! All you need is nine other students who share the same passion as you.

A small sample of our clubs includes:

  • Badminton Club
  • East Meets West
  • Future of Africa
  • Fashion in Motion
  • Global China Connection
  • International Students’ Association
  • Korean Student Association
  • Laurier Marketing Association
  • Laurier Salsa Club
  • Model United Nations
  • Muslim Student Association
  • Women in Leadership

Keep Fit and Have Fun

Laurier has about 500 varsity athletes (Golden Hawks) on 22 varsity teams, but you do not have to be a superstar athlete to compete: Laurier offers a very popular intramural program. Last year more than 8,000 students participated in a variety of intramural sports to keep their bodies as active as their minds. With options as diverse as ultimate frisbee, squash and dodgeball, there’s a sport for everyone.

Our Athletic Complex (AC) in Waterloo includes an Olympic-size pool, a triple gymnasium, dance studios, and a large fitness centre that received a $5-million expansion in 2013. Outside, we have a full-sized, FIFA-certified soccer field and a stadium that is home to our football, soccer, rugby and lacrosse teams.

In Brantford, you can enjoy fitness classes and intramurals in the Wilkes House Recreation Centre. Other intramural and extramural programs take advantage of the City of Brantford parks and recreational space. We also entered into an agreement with the local YMCA to build a $58-million recreation, athletics and wellness facility that will support the needs of our growing campus. New for 2016, the Brantford campus will now offer varsity sports, including men's indoor soccer, as well as men's and women's cross country.

Live in Residence

We’re committed to making your first year at Laurier enjoyable, safe and rewarding. Senior students, called Residence Dons, live in each residence community and act as role models and mentors, providing you with support as you make the transition to living away from home.

Dormitory Style Residences

Students live in a single or double room, with a shared bathroom. This style offers a great opportunity to get to know your entire residence community. In dormitory style, a meal plan is mandatory.

Apartment Style Residences

Students can be in a single or double room in a self-contained suite with a kitchen, living area and bathrooms. This style offers a great blend between privacy and socializing with your neighbours. In Waterloo, meal plans are optional in this type of residence, because you’ll have the ability to cook meals in the suites. In Brantford, meal plans are mandatory.

Why Live in Residence?

  • Lots of opportunities to get involved.
  • Easier transition to university.
  • New friends; diversity of cultures.
  • Close to everything on campus.
  • High-speed Internet access.
  • Learn more about our residence buildings.

Waterloo Campus Meal Plans

Meal plans are required for all residence students at the Waterloo campus. Students living off-campus in Waterloo may also purchase a meal plan. These plans allow you to purchase food from a number of on- and off-campus locations. A wide range of menu choices including vegetarian, vegan and Asian cuisine are offered and we are able to accommodate special diets such as halal and most food allergies and restrictions.

Food in KW

About 20% of the area’s residents were born outside Canada. Reflecting this diversity, there are many restaurants and specialty food shops that cater to the international community in KW.

Here are a few international dining favourites:

  • Best Chinese: King Tin Restaurant
  • Best Korean: Da Won
  • Best Halal food: Ammar Halal Meats
  • Best African and Caribbean grocery store: A to Z
  • Best international market: Pi Foodstore and International Eatery

Brantford Campus Meal Plans

Meal plans are required for residence students at the Brantford campus at a cost of $400 per term (fall and winter). Even though all of the residences are apartment-style, which means you’ll have a kitchen in the apartment to cook all of your meals, the meal plan will come in handy for buying groceries at FreshCo, a local grocery store, just a short five minute walk from campus. You can also use your meal plan at Williams Fresh Cafe, Subway and Golden Grounds, just to name a few locations.
