Join us at Laurier

Being a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Moving from high school to a university academic environment can be a challenging adjustment for many students. You might find that teaching and learning at Laurier is very different from your home country. Our staff and student volunteers are dedicated to ensuring that your experience as an international student is the best it can be. We are here to help you through your entire university experience – from application to graduation – and beyond.

While we are committed to providing a variety of services to ensure student health, safety and academic success, we offer support specifically for international students.

Laurier International

Laurier International is a resource centre for international degree-seeking and exchange students who are looking for information or assistance. We are here to help you with such issues as travelling to Canada and life in Canada and life at Laurier, Canada’s immigration rules and regulations as they relate to you as an international student, and your academic transition to studying in Canada.

Our offices are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and you can come in to use our services or to hang out in the International Student Lounge and meet other students. You can either drop by during regular office hours, or email or call to make an appointment to see an adviser at a time that is convenient for you.

International Student Support

There are dedicated staff members in the Laurier International office that are here just for you. Laurier’s International Student Support department has international student advisers and peer mentors to help you learn about and access services on cultural adaption, academic transition and health and well–being. ISS provides the following services free of charge to all international students currently enrolled at Laurier:

  • Pre-arrival information.
  • Assistance in arranging temporary and permanent accommodations.
  • Support for renewing student permits and visas and for applying for work permit.
  • Orientation upon arrival.
  • Information on your international student health plan (UHIP).
  • Academic transition and English language support.
  • Support for all international clubs, societies and associations.
  • General advising in areas such as health and well-being, cultural adjustment and support for personal problems.

Visit us and learn more about the activities we organize, including programs like First Language Tutoring (offered for common first-year courses) and SPEAK (focused on developing presentation and speaking skills).

International Peer Mentor Program

The International Peer Mentor program matches you with an upper-year Laurier student to help you get oriented to life at Laurier, to answer your questions about living in Canada, and to provide you with personalized resources during your first-year on campus. International Peer Mentors will contact you in the summer and continue to provide guidance through events and check-ins during the fall and winter semesters.
