50th Anniversary Celebration

The 2010-2011 academic year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Geography and Environmental Studies Department as a degree granting discipline at Wilfrid Laurier University. It also marks the 100th Anniversary of Wilfrid Laurier University.

To celebrate the occasion, Department Faculty and Staff invite you to attend a day-long 50th birthday party at Laurier on Saturday, April 2, 2011. The festivities will focus on where we have come from, who we are and where we are going.

The activities will range from specially invited guest presentations, interactive poster sessions, and hands-on games including Geocaching and Geopardy. Discussion will focus on the discipline and how it fits with societal and environmental needs in today’s and tomorrow’s world. The presentations will chart our history and outline what we are up to today…sort of a virtual field trip in time and space. Lunch will be provided and a licensed afternoon poster session will provide an opportunity to meet with old friends and acquaintances. An optional dinner with a guest speaker and digitized slide shows from past field trips will round off the day.

Time for reminiscing and meeting old friends is a priority. We are looking forward to sharing this day with you.

At this time we are looking for expressions of interest…which of course will aid significantly in planning.

If you are interested in being involved with the 50th Anniversary birthday celebration in some way, i.e. as a Guest Speaker, please contact Hope Engel, at, 519-884-0710, ext. 2160.

The deadline for responses is extended until March 14th, 2011.
