Ken Maly, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is known at Laurier for two things: research on the synthesis of organic compounds, and his commitment and dedication to teaching excellence.
With courses ranging in audience and size – from an introductory chemistry class of 500 first-years, to a seminar course with just 10 graduate students – Maly handles teaching with ease, and continually strives to provide a positive and effective learning environment for his students.
As an innovative educator, Maly incorporates blended learning – a mix of online components and classroom time – into his courses to improve and enhance student comprehension. Pre-lecture videos and online assessments are some of the blended applications that have lead to improved learning for Maly’s students. Mid-term test grades have increased while failure rates have experienced a sharp decline.
“I can’t take credit for my students’ achievements, but it is very satisfying to think that I may have played a small role in guiding them,” says Maly.
Maly is one of Laurier’s highest-rated instructors when it comes to teaching evaluations, receiving regular praise for student mentoring, classroom management, and helping struggling first-year students.
“Professor Maly is always available to his students, whether it’s during his office hours or not,” writes a student in an anonymous teaching evaluation. “He is open to help any student with school work or just for general guidance.”
Maly stands out as an extraordinary teacher and researcher in his field at Laurier and beyond. He is a 2015 Laurier Teaching Fellow and the 2014 recipient of the university’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the full-time faculty category. Additional accolades include the Thieme Chemistry Journal Awardee (2013) and the Ontario Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Research and Innovation (2011).
