Ildiko de Boer graduated from the University of Guelph with a PhD in Plant Agriculture, where she specialized in plant physiology. Prior to joining Laurier in 2014, Ildiko worked with researchers and industry in identifying and securing funding opportunities.
The manager, research facilitation, provides leadership to our grants facilitators, and supports the vice-president: research and director in developing and implementing key strategic initiatives and priority setting for major research funding.
Stephanie Whitney’s primary role as Manager, Research Partnerships is to advance Laurier’s research partnerships and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations within and outside the institution.
Stephanie graduated with a BASc in Environmental-Chemical Engineering with an optionin Management Science from the University of Waterloo before practicingas a professional engineer for 10 years. She then pursued her Master of Environment and Business (MEB) and PhD in social and ecological sustainability from the University of Waterloo.
Rachel Barken received her doctorate in Sociology from McMaster University. Prior to joining the Office of Research Services, Rachel was a research fellow at York University.
Rachel works one-on-one with faculty in the social sciences and humanities to identify funding opportunities and to support the development of successful research grants. Rachel reviews and provides feedback on grant applications, delivers workshops about grant opportunities and grant writing principles, and meets with faculty to develop multi-year research funding plans.
Kerri Serman graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Ph.D. in Economics and a research focus on applications of behavioral economics to climate change. Her postdoctoral fellowship, in the School of Economics, evaluated the impact of behavioral economic interventions in promoting pro-environmental behavior. Prior to joining Laurier’s Office of Research Services, Kerri was the in-house social scientist at the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies, where she studied trends and patterns in Jewish communities.

Kerri reviews and provides feedback on grant applications, delivers workshops about grant opportunities and grant writing principles, and meets with faculty to develop multi-year research funding plans.
Kumudinie Kariyapperuma received her doctorate from the University of Guelph, where she studied greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture as a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar. She has worked for multiyear, multidisciplinary and multinational research projects at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo. Prior to joining Laurier in 2019, Kariyapperuma was the interim strategic programs awards and agreements officer in the University of Guelph’s Office of Research.
As the research facilitator (natural sciences), Kumudinie works one-on-one with faculty in the natural sciences to identify funding opportunities and to support the development of successful research grants. Her work includes reviewing and providing feedback on grant applications, delivering workshops about grant opportunities and grant writing principles, and meeting with faculty to develop multi-year research funding plans.
Emmanuel Songsore holds a PhD in Geography and Interdisciplinary Environment and Sustainability from Western University. Prior to joining Laurier, he worked as an educational developer at Western University, where he provided pedagogical training for faculty across campus and worked on research projects across disciplines. Emmanuel focuses on identifying, promoting and managing high value/impact research opportunities in the social sciences and humanities.
The Research Facilitator, Brantford works one-on-one with faculty at the Brantford campus to identify funding opportunities and to support the development of successful research grants. This work includes reviewing and providing feedback on grant applications, delivering workshops about grant opportunities and grant writing principles, and meeting with faculty to develop multi-year research funding plans.
Nick Skinner works to support and share Laurier’s research with the wider community. His role spans the Office of Research Services and the External Relations department. Nick has a BAA in Media Studies and a diploma in Media Communications from the University of Guelph-Humber, and has worked at organizations including Sunnybrook Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities Toronto. Allison McManus is responsible for supporting a variety of strategic research initiatives under the vice-president: research portfolio. She is a graduate of Laurier’s BSc Geography program and MSc Integrative Biology program.
Shawna Reibling's primary role is to assist faculty with crafting and implementing knowledge mobilization plans. She also translates research into accessible formats for knowledge users and the public. She tweets as @LaurierResearch.
From 2010 to 2017 she served as a broker for ResearchImpact, a pan-Canadian network committed to maximizing the impact of academic research for the social, economic, environmental and health benefits of Canadians. She is a founding member of the Institutue for Knowledge Mobilization. Shawna graduated with an MA in Communications from Simon Fraser University.
Louisa Ho graduated from the University of Toronto with a PhD in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, with a research focus on the molecular genetics of cancer progression. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at McMaster University, developing novel cancer immunotherapies. Prior to joining Laurier’s Office of Research Services, Louisa worked at the Innovation and Commercialization Office at Brock University to facilitate academic-industrial research partnerships.
The Industrial Liaison Specialist is responsible for enhancing the development of strategic collaborative relationships between Laurier faculty and external organizations including the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and the public sector in supporting the university’s research, intellectual property and technology transfer activities. Through a variety of commercial arrangements, including licensing and start-up company creation, she is also responsible for the identification, protection and commercial exploitation of intellectual property developed by university faculty and other researchers.
Courtney Lunt coordinates Laurier’s Research Ethics Board and the Animal Care Committee. Additionally, she oversees the review and approval of applications for administrative research projects. She is a graduate of Laurier’s MA program in Social Psychology.
Jeanette Uri provides leadership and direction to the research finance team at Laurier, overseeing the compliance and financial reporting functions for all externally funded research grants. She graduated with a Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo and holds accounting designations for both the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) and Chartered Accounts (CA) of Ontario. Jeanette is a member of the Canadian Association of Research Administrators (CARA) and participates in the CARA national and regional conferences as a facilitator and occasional presenter in research finance sessions.
The Research Finance Compliance Officer completes financial administration duties.
The research finance compliance officer ensures financial compliance of expenditures related to externally funded research grants.
The Research Finance Accountant provides support to grant holders through financial reporting, compliance, advising, and financial analysis.

Rosemary Springett is a Western graduate and holds accounting designations from the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) and Certified Management Accountants (CMA). Rosemary has been at Laurier since 2003.
As a research finance accountant, Rosemary provides support to grant holders including review of grant payroll expenditure requests for eligibility and available funds, as well as monitoring, tracking, preparing, reviewing and signing financial reports on these funds.
Rosemary directly supports grant holders whose last names begin with H–Q.
René Soto graduated with a Master of Business Administration and Economics degree at the University of Havana. René is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Research Administrators (CARA) and participates in CARA national and regional conferences where he networks and shares common issues and solutions with counterparts at other institutions.
