Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Emily Chatten is a Wilfrid Laurier Alumni and the owner/founder of Kinthera an online portal that matches individuals with qualified mental health professional in the Waterloo, Kitchener and Guelph area.
Emily was born and raised in a small town in Durham Region. She moved to Waterloo to complete her Hon BA in Psychology at Laurier, and is now completing her Master of Counselling through Athabasca University.
Kinthera is focused on recognizing and removing barriers to finding a mental health therapist. Emily uses evidence-based, social work best practices to match individuals with the right therapist for them.
The idea for Kinthera was developed from Emily’s desire to get more people through a successful therapeutic process, by removing barriers to finding the right therapist for them. “When someone starts the search for a therapist, they only have a 50% chance of making it to a second session of therapy,” which means finding the right match the first time is extremely important.
Right now, there is no way for someone to make an informed decision when they’re choosing a therapist. Emily sees this as a major problem in health care, and believes it is her responsibility to do better. Emily believes that everyone should have an equal and fair opportunity to overcome their personal challenges and she wants to use her knowledge and passion in this field to help clients overcome barriers to mental health services.
Emily started developing the company in January 2020, launched her website in July 2020, and is now matching clients with therapists in Waterloo, Kitchener and Guelph area. When she isn’t working on her business, she is an involved member of her community, whether that means supporting local businesses or volunteering where she can. She also loves picking up challenging, new hobbies; right now, she is attempting to grow a vegetable garden, despite the lack of a green thumb.
