Paul E. Jessop (BSc 1973 University of Waterloo; MA 1975 and PhD 1978 Harvard University, P. Eng 2006) is the dean of Science and a professor in the Department of Physics and Computer Science.
In 1978, he joined the Electrical Engineering Division of the National Research Council of Canada (Ottawa), where he worked in the area of laser spectroscopy of solids. From 1981 to 2010 he was at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario in the Department of Engineering Physics. He was chair of that department from 2001 to 2009, and served 2 terms as associate dean of Graduate Studies prior to that.
His appointment as dean of Science began in July 2010.
Jessop’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of integrated optics, semiconductor optoelectronic devices and fiber optics. In recent years, his research has focussed primarily on silicon-based photonics, which is a field that is growing in importance as silicon chip manufacturers begin to make use of on-chip optical communications to enhance device performance.
