I began my studies in composition in high school, with the American composer Allen Shawn, and continued to study composition at the University of Victoria (B.C.) where I received my BMus and MMus degrees, studying with Rudolf Komorous, Jo Kondo, Martin Bartlett, Michael Longton and John Celona.
My works have been performed by many ensembles and soloists, including: BBC Scottish Orchestra, Vancouver, Victoria and Kitchener-Waterloo Orchestras, Arraymusic, Vancouver New Music, Eve Egoyan, Elinor Frey, Elissa Poole, Tafelmusik, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and the Penderecki and Bozzini String Quartets, as well as by many soloists and ensembles abroad. My work is recorded on the Another Timbre label in England.
I have been a guest lecturer at McGill University, York University, University of Toronto, Trinity College and the Royal Academy (London), Open Ears Festival, Vancouver New Music Festival and the Other Minds Festival.
I was the Artistic Director of the contemporary music ensemble Arraymusic in Toronto (1988-1993) and directed their Young Composers' Workshop from 1987 to 1997.
