Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

At Wilfrid Laurier University, we’re gearing up for a great year and I am so glad for all of our students who are going to be part of it.

Laurier is renowned for delivering excellence in academics, innovation in teaching and learning, and an exceptional student experience.

In fact, our students have ranked us No. 1 in student satisfaction for the last two years in the Maclean’s University rankings. We care deeply about the student experience here.

As someone who knows Laurier inside and out, I want to share a few tips for ensuring your school year is a successful one:

First -- go to class!

It might seem obvious, but it takes discipline and commitment when others around you are sleeping in or going to the gym or hanging out.

Don’t just show up. Be present. It is an incredible privilege to come to university – something few people in the world ever get to do – so make the most of it.

Take advantage of Laurier’s learning resources. The university offers academic advising and services for student success. The Accessible Learning Centre helps students with accommodations and assistive technologies. Our librarians are here to help you with research and special projects.

Make sure you are proactive and use these services!

Prioritize your health.

Laurier’s student wellness centres have a team of doctors, nurses, counsellors, chiropractors and massage therapists to support your physical and mental well-being.

You can’t succeed at school if you aren’t taking care of your health. We all need help sometimes so seek help when you need it.

Check in with the Career Centre.

Whether you’re in your first year or final year, Laurier’s Career Centre will help you explore career options, brush up your resume or prepare you with a plan for further education.

When the time comes, we want all of our Golden Hawks to have a successful launch from the nest.

Finally, have fun!

University is about meeting new people and broadening your horizons.

Join a club. Take advantage of Laurier’s great athletic facilities. Surround yourself with friends who challenge you to be curious, caring and kind. Get the absolute most you can from your university experience.

I am excited to start a new year at Laurier. I hope you are too! Go Hawks!
