Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

This online, four-module (112 hours), Positive Education Certificate prepares front-line educators, administrators, parents and organizations with the knowledge and skills to effectively support the students and institutions to thrive. Positive education applies the science of positive psychology to learning environments, which not only enhances peer relationships, but also improves academic success.

The combination of theoretical and practical approaches in resilience, optimism and well-being provides you with the background and necessary tools to inform and embed the principles and practices of strength-based interventions to promote flourishing learning environments.

Through the exploration of individual and collective strengths, you'll gain an in-depth understanding of how to optimize your organizational culture to maximize your teaching and learning potential. This program provides the scientific foundations and applied interventions of positive education to enable you to co-create implementation plans to accelerate the shift towards flourishing learning environments for administrators, teachers and students alike, through collaborative and experiential learning opportunities.

With the current shift towards positive parenting, the Canadian Paediatric Society's recent position statement has begun asking primary care practitioners to encourage positive interactions with their children instead of punishment and focusing on a set of principles to correct children's misbehaviour with greater empathy and communication.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a sound understanding of positive psychology and well-being.
  • Critically examine positive education principles, research and practices.
  • Assess and apply various well-being building practices into educational environments.
  • Identify and implement resources, activities and practices to support and sustain student and educator well-being.

  • Design an implementation plan to enable positive learning and well-being by promoting a strength-based culture using the practices and principles of positive psychology.

"I believe that it is essential for educators (and administrators!) to learn about positive education because we have to get it into our systems. Our students all need to gain the knowledge and skills that they could be exposed to through an infusion of positive education into our traditional curriculum."

Kristie King, Middle School Teacher, Ontario

Positive education uses scientific foundations and applied interventions of positive education to optimize organizational cultures and maximize teaching and learning potential. It is not an alternate method of treating psychological disorders or mental illness, nor does it address teaching methods. The Positive Education Certificate, offered through the Centre for Public Safety and Well-Being, seeks to help front-line educators, administrators, parents and organizations learn theoretical and practical approaches in resilience, optimism and well-being. The certificate does not provide graduates the authority to practice psychology, offer psychological services or teach in the Canadian education system.
