Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

The Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program is an academic English program for future Laurier students. If you don’t meet Laurier’s English language proficiency requirements, the LEAF program can help. Languages Canada logo

The LEAF program is accredited by Languages Canada.

Location

The LEAF Program is offered at Laurier’s Brantford campus, a small and friendly campus located in the heart of downtown Brantford. The campus is integrated into the downtown core of the city, giving you the opportunity to practice your English by interacting with locals in addition to other university students.

Times

We offer four terms every year:

  • September – December (14 weeks)
  • January – April (14 weeks)
  • April – June (8 weeks)
  • June – August (8 weeks)

LEAF Levels

Before you start the LEAF program, submit your most recent IELTS or TOEFL score to leaf@wlu.ca to determine which of our 5 levels you will start in.

Note: All accepted tests of English proficiency may be used to determine your LEAF program level. Email the LEAF program office at leaf@wlu.ca to see what level you may qualify for based on another test of English proficiency.

When you successfully complete a level of the LEAF program, you will progress to the next level. When you successfully finish level 5, which includes completing a course for credit that can be used towards your degree program at Laurier, you have met Laurier’s English proficiency requirements.

How to Apply

There are two ways to begin your LEAF program studies at Laurier, which vary depending on your academic goals.

  1. Apply to an academic program at the university through the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC). If you do not meet our English proficiency requirements and are eligible for LEAF levels 3, 4 or 5, you may receive a conditional offer of admission. After successfully completing the LEAF program, you can progress into your undergraduate studies full time.
    • 105 Applicants: You do not need to apply directly to the LEAF program. Applicants who do not meet Laurier’s English language proficiency requirements will be assessed for a conditional offer to an academic program, with the condition that they complete the LEAF program. After successfully completing their LEAF studies, applicants may progress into their undergraduate studies.
    • 101 Applicants (current Ontario high school student): Please submit a LEAF Program Registration Form. After successfully completing LEAF studies, applicants may progress into undergraduate studies.
  2. If you wish to apply to the LEAF program only and not to undergraduate studies, complete the steps below. Please note, in order to make an offer of admission, we require a current assessment of your English proficiency, which must be uploaded with your application form. Our English proficiency page provides you with a list of accepted English testing services.
