My name is Harry Guenther (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I am the Computer Guy at FSW. OK. You may not like my answers here but I will try to clear up some student email confusions regarding using personal email addresses versus mylaurier.ca. Your email address as far as the university is concerned is YourNetworkID@mylaurier.ca (i.e. email@example.com). Now, if you are using your personal email address, you may think this is incorrect, but hear me out first. The university maintains a secure and reliable email system for it's students. WLU can guarantee that this service is available for ALL students and therefore students are assured that education related messages are delivered reliably. Messages exchanged between Faculty, Admissions, Registration, Administration and Students will be delivered properly and on time. If an issue occurs students are protected because email administrators will be able to troubleshoot and trace any failures caused by system error, sender error, virus, spam filters and etc. We can NOT guarantee that other email systems will function properly and so if critical education related messages are not delivered we can not help determine the validity or cause of the failure. Truth is, keeping track of fluid lists of personal email addresses creates a great deal confusion, frustration and lost time for all. Faculty, students, helpdesk, registrar and etc. find it challenging to impossible to troubleshoot problems or deliver important messages consistently. If you want to be guaranteed that you will get ALL messages related to your work here at the university you will need, and want, to incorporate this email strategy into your routine. It's kind of like having to go to a certain room for a lecture, but here you visit a certain mailbox. You can access the myLaurier email system via: MyLaurier.ca >>once you are logged in there is a 'Webmail' button in the upper right corner (ish). or WebMail >>this can be found in the WLU Home page in the "Quick Links" menu. Your username is the first 4 letters of your last name followed by the last 4 nuimbers of your student id, (like guen1234) and the default password is your birth date ( month, day, year -2 digits each i.e. mmddyy). These are the same credentials that you use to access WLU Network, MyLaurier Student Portal, Webmail, MyLearningSpace. Finally, once you are in the Webmail system there is an option to have the WLU myLaurier.ca system forward any messages on to another email address. I don't recommend this (again, messages may be filtered out or lost by your personal email system.), but you are free to do so. I know no one likes being told where to go, and we do try to be flexible, but we have found that the "open" email system does not work and only adds to the levels of stress and confusion for all. Hope that's useful info. Let me know if you need anything further. Harry Guenther FSW-ITSG x5255 "For Love or Money...?"
