Our Master of Divinity (MDiv) program provides both the theoretical and practical tools necessary for you to prepare for the rewarding and challenging profession of Christian service.
In preparation for parish, institutional and administrative ministries, you’ll take courses in theology, biblical studies, counselling, ethics, church history, liturgics and administration. There are two options available in our Master of Divinity program:
Waterloo Lutheran Seminary welcomes students from a variety of denominations into this program.
You can jointly complete this program with Laurier’s Master of Social Work program and earn two master’s degrees in four years.
This program can be completed in 24-26 months, depending on which option you choose, and whether you’re in full- or part-time studies.
In addition to successfully completing the academic courses, you must be deemed capable of assuming the professional responsibilities of the ordained ministry to be recommended for ordination by our faculty.
Coursework option: Students admitted to Laurier’s Master of Divinity program are automatically entered into the coursework option, which includes 27 courses. If you’re preparing for professional ministry, you must also meet the internship and/or field education requirements of your church. If you’re preparing for ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, you must successfully complete an internship. The internship is normally taken after your third year.
Contextual option: Students taking the contextual components of our program are required to be satisfactorily involved in the life of a congregation. In addition to 30 courses, you’ll complete one unit of Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) and a 9-12 month internship. Our 12-week SPE course is taken during the summer after your first or second academic year.
