Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Anna Graczyk (BASc '16)

student at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine

"The best part of this program is that you learn the social aspects regarding health and well-being, as well as the nitty gritty science of how certain pathologies develop. There is so much knowledge and power in understanding that these two play a huge role in this thing we call health! It opened my mind and allowed me to develop the tools to critically think about health and how I want to play a role in it.

"As well as being very friendly and approachable, professors were and still are role models that positively impacted my life and the life of other students.

"When I think about my time at Laurier Brantford and my program, I can honestly say I have no negative things to say. I would recommend this program to students who want to work in the health industry, but don't know what they want to do quite yet.

"This program doesn't narrow your scope in the sense that you could further your education without feeling like you have to start all over. Also, if you want to go to a smaller campus, and be able to recognize faces every day at school. I got to know all my colleagues and professors on a first-name basis and make lasting friendships with them.

"I can confidently say that each of the courses in the BASc have helped me in my program now, from the social determinants of health, infection and immunity, anatomy and physiology, to public health, genetics, etc."

Clare Flethcher (BASc '16)

nursing student

"I would not be where I am today without the learning opportunities I was presented with during my time as a Health Studies student at Laurier’s Brantford campus.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the Health Studies program has, and will continue to, contribute to my ability to be a competent, empathetic, and well-rounded health care provider as I move forward in my career.

"I enjoyed the well-rounded nature of the program. Approaching the concept of health and wellness from both science and arts perspectives allowed me to connect important concepts. This program changed the way I look how social factors, such as income inequality, impact human health. I carried this learning with me, as I’m now a nursing student, and I can view patients in my care in a holistic, well-informed and empathetic manner.

"I highly recommend Laurier’s Brantford campus. The smaller campus size and downtown location afforded me many learning opportunities, both inside and outside of the classroom. If I could choose an undergraduate program over again, I would unreservedly choose Health Studies at the Brantford campus."

Christine Amin (BASc '17)

Master of Science in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Public Health candidate

"I really enjoyed the various academic perspectives this program offers from both the science and arts perspectives. All course content was made relatable. The knowledge taught from first year builds up and comes together into a full picture in the fourth year.

"I would recommend this incredible and engaging program to students who want to do further education in any professional program and to students who want to go and work in health or social services industries.

"The support from professors and my peers was been the best experience ever and I always love to look back and reflect on my time at Laurier. This place become home for me and the people around me became family."

Jacob Pearce (BASc '18)

"This program delivers such a well-rounded education and really focuses on problem solving, which is such an essential skill to have. It also encourages a compassionate view and seeks to understand things from the patient’s view, as well as the health care professional.

"The Health Studies Practicum course really gave me a chance to experience health care and see how what it’s like to work in the real world. It showed both the rewards and the difficulties of the health care field. From hard sciences like biology and chemistry to studying Canadian health care systems and critical disabilities, you get a very well-rounded education. I loved every minute of it. Laurier really is an amazing school!"

Abdikarim Osman (BASc '16)

settlement counsellor

"I liked how this program focuses on both the social sciences and life sciences. When I graduated, I felt I was equipped with the necessary tools to pursue postgraduate studies.

"Human Anatomy and Physiology was my favourite course. The professor was very creative in her teaching and we also had the opportunity to observe what we learned in class in a cadaver lab."

Emily McCormack (BASc '16)

Hemophilia Ontario youth coordinator

"I wouldn't have the job I have today without this program. Research I performed in this program helped succeed in my current career. And I am using the information I learned in this program in my current role.

"I enjoyed the wide variety of interesting courses, excellent professors and the great people I got to study with. I am so glad I went to Laurier! I gained so much knowledge and developed friendships I will have for the rest of my life.”

Kylie Caplan (BASc ’16)

"My experience at the Brantford campus in the Health Studies program was fantastic. All of my professors were passionate, approachable, knowledgeable in their respective fields and clearly dedicated to ensuring the success of their students.

"The program was well organized and designed with material that is up-to-date and relevant, including some hands-on experience (e.g., in one course, we visited a human cadaver lab). Upon graduating, I felt prepared and confident to enter a postgraduate program in clinical research.

"What’s more significant however is that I frequently required material in an alternate format as I am blind, and even then sometimes I required further explanation for extremely visual material. All of my professors were more than willing to take the time to make sure I understood the material. The professors at Laurier, along with the staff at the Accessible Learning Centre, ensure that anyone can successfully take and thoroughly enjoy the Health Studies program."

Kowther Abdulle (BASc '16)

"If you want the highest-quality education by personable, approachable and intelligent professors, I recommend this program. Not only have I gained knowledge from many topics in science and arts, I also graduated with the confidence and skills needed to succeed in my career.

"I enjoyed the courses and my professors the most. This program is filled with professors who will help you grow as a person. Professors were always there to help you by simply emailing them or going to their office hours.

"I'll always be thankful of my experience at the Brantford campus. All staff at Laurier, from the Wellness Centre to the Dean of Students, are compassionate and easy to talk to."
