Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

About Global Studies at Laurier

Global Studies gives you flexibility to shape your degree according to your own interests. You can choose to take a range of courses across our curriculum, or do a concentration in one of our three fields of study:

  • Peace and Conflict
  • International Development
  • Globalization and Culture

Learning Outcomes

As a Global Studies student, you'll explore how globalization challenges us to think in new ways about the relationships between citizens, communities, governments, corporations and other organizations on the world stage.

You’ll gain an awareness of crucial issues like food security, human migration and Indigenous rights. You'll also learn how to conduct research and critical analysis to tackle specific problems both around the world and within your local community.

Study Abroad and Put Learning into Practice

We encourage our students to internationalize their degree to build the kinds of intercultural skills that are vital in today's workplaces.

  • Take one of our field courses;
  • Do a semester abroad; or
  • Participate in our Global Studies Experience, where you’ll conduct a volunteer placement abroad as part of your academic learning.

Complement Your Degree with the Social Entrepreneurship Option

Global Studies also hosts the Social Entrepreneurship Option, a specialized degree component that will engage you in active social innovation, informed by principles of social justice and environmental sustainability. This option, among others offered at Laurier, can complement your solid academic foundation in the social sciences and humanities with specialized skills that will help you find a career niche just right for you.

"A Global Studies degree is as colourful and dynamic as you choose to make it – the Global Studies department is fully supportive of its students, and its faculty and staff are incredibly approachable in guiding students along their undergraduate journey!"

– Shafferan Sonneveld (BA ’11)
