Being a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Global Studies (BA)

 waterloo

No matter where life takes you, your destination will be global. But what does it take to make your mark in the world? In Global Studies we provide you with intellectual and experiential tools to live, work and find meaning in our globally interconnected age.

Global Studies gives you flexibility to shape your degree according to your own interests. You can choose to take a range of courses across our curriculum, or do a concentration in one of our three fields of study:

  • Peace and Conflict
  • International Development
  • Globalization and Culture

Connect with global issues that have an impact in your local community, or take part in our Global Studies Experience, a field placement where you connect academic inquiry to experiential activity abroad.

As a Global Studies student, you’ll explore how globalization challenges us to think in new ways about the relationships between citizens, communities, governments, corporations and other organizations on the world stage. We’ll help you draw on different perspectives to develop a broad understanding of contemporary global issues like armed conflict, food security, human migration, indigenous rights and environmental change. You’ll also learn how to conduct research and critical reflection to tackle specific problems both around the world and within your local community.

Global Studies also hosts the Social Entrepreneurship Option, a specialized add-on to your degree that will engage you in active social innovation, informed by principles of social justice and environmental sustainability. Options like this can enhance your degree by complementing your solid foundation in liberal arts with specialized skills that will help you find a career niche that's just right for you.
