Program Objectives and Descriptions

  • promotion of an understanding of the form, function, and interactions of life processes and structures, at every level of the hierarchy of life - from the molecular and microscopic levels to the roles played by organisms as part of ecosystems and the biosphere
  • provision of a well-rounded education in the biological sciences so that students are well-prepared to succeed in any post-graduate program or career
  • emphasis on hands-on learning, through tutorials, laboratory exercises (both 'wet' and computer-based), field trips, and independent research projects that cross the sub-disciplines of biology

Honours BSc Biology Program

Our Bachelor of Science degree prepares students for graduate school, or for a career that involves an in-depth understanding of the biological sciences. The BSc degree emphasizes not only topics in Biology, but also requires that a student develop a fundamental understanding of chemistry as applied to Biology. Courses in Mathematics are also required in the program, so that students can use common analytical tools (e.g., calculus, statistics) to make sense of biological processes. Students who earn the BSc often pursue graduate studies (at MSc or PhD level), they enter professional health sciences post-graduate programs (e.g., medicine, dentistry, nursing), they pursue a career in teaching (elementary and secondary) or in research (at government and private labs), or enter the business world (pharmaceutical sales is a lucrative and popular choice).

Honours BSc Biology with Environmental Science Option

A student majoring in Biology often has an interest in environmental issues, and how the principles of science can be used to address environmental problems. The Environmental Science Option serves those students who envision themselves in a career in environmental consulting, or in a position with a government agency dealing with the implementation of environmental policies. Certain courses in Biology (choices include Ecology, and Environmental Toxicology) and Chemistry (choices include Environmental Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Aquatic Chemistry) are required. In addition, the program includes mandatory courses in Physical Geography.

Honours BSc Biology and Chemistry Program

This double major program combines the two cognate disciplines, Biology and Chemistry. The program prepares students for graduate work in either Biology or Chemistry. Many graduates of this program choose to become secondary school science teachers. Others pursue careers as research technicians in areas – such as genetics, biotechnology, and molecular biology – that stress the interface between Biology and Chemistry. This program focuses on both Biology (6.0 credits are taken at the senior level) and Chemistry (6.5 senior credits, with required courses in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Thermodynamics and Chemical Kinetics). Mathematics and Physics are also required in the program.

Honours BSc Biology and Mathematics

This program emphasizes two cognate disciplines – Biology and Mathematics. Many students in the program are aiming at a career teaching at the high school level. Others are preparing for graduate school, especially in the areas of the application of statistics to biological problems, and in bioinformatics. There are many career opportunities open to those who can apply the techniques of mathematical analysis to a broad spectrum of biological problems. Graduates choose careers in industry (including pharmaceutical companies, agricultural chemical companies, the fossil fuel industry, the insurance industry), in government (environmental assessment, public health), and in the health care sector (management of health care data
is growing area for rewarding careers).

Honours BSc Biology and Physical Geography

This program is selected by students who wish to explore the intersection between topics in physical geography and biology. For example, often students have an interest in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, and wish to develop a deeper knowledge of the physical and chemical functioning of natural bodies of water in which organisms from bacteria to whales live. Because this program requires courses in Chemistry and Mathematics, as well Geology, in addition to the 6.0 senior credits in each of Biology and Physical Geography, it is also a good preparation for aspiring science teachers. The program is rounded off with a required elective course from a Humanities discipline.

Honours BSc Biology and Psychology

An honours degree is one that emphasizes specialization in a discipline – or in the case of a double major program like this BSc in Biology and Psychology – in two cognate disciplines. While many graduates of this program choose to become secondary school science teachers, it has also been shown to be a good preparation for graduate work in either Biology or Psychology. Students often have an interest in neuropsychology, or animal behaviour, and find that the double major allows them to build a knowledge base that emphasizes a fundamental understanding of genetics, and cell and molecular biology, as applied to the functioning of human and animal brains. Other students have found this double major program to be an excellent way to prepare for a career in the Health Science professions.

Honours BA Biology Program

The primary goal of our Honours Bachelor of Arts degree is to prepare students for a career in teaching (especially at the secondary school level), or for a career which combines the need for an understanding of biology with skills in communication and critical thinking. Built into our BA program is a requirement for taking courses in the Arts, including philosophy, and the history and philosophy of science (you will earn an HPS minor). Our intent is to produce graduates who understand the important concepts of modern biology and who can champion these concepts in the context of Canada’s multicultural, tolerant, and innovative society. Graduates of this program most often pursue careers in teaching, in law, in public policy, in science journalism, or in information sciences. However, it is not uncommon for BA grads to go on to MSc programs in Biology.

Honours BA Biology in Combination with Another Honours BA

This program offers the greatest flexibility of any of our honours degree programs. At Laurier, this is the mechanism by which you can earn a double major in two disciplines that are not necessarily closely related – for example, Biology and History, or Biology and French Language and Literature – but which fit your particular interests. If you are interested in obtaining a broad education that keeps the doors open for future opportunities in widely different subject areas, this is the program for you! Some of the graduates of this program have gone on to do graduate work in Biology; others have become social workers, teachers, journalists, and public policy analysts.
