SSHRC Doctoral Awards

Applications are to be completed online, and students are responsible for ensuring that they have met all the eligibility requirements and have adhered to the scholarship application guidelines.

*Students registered at Wilfrid Laurier University must submit their application to their home department by the departmental deadline. 


  • $20,000/year for SSHRC Doctoral fellowship
  • $35,000/year for Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)

Duration of Award

Doctoral Fellowship: up to 48 months*

  • value and duration of award based on number of months of full-time study (or equivalent) the applicant will have completed at the proposed start date of the award

CGS Doctoral Awards: up to 36 months (to be held during years 1-3 or 2-4 only of doctoral program*)
*students in the 2nd year of a doctoral program are eligible for a Doctoral Fellowship only as their duration of tenure is less than 36 months

Eligibility to Apply

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • be applying for support to pursue a first PhD (or equivalent)
  • not be under SSHRC sanction for financial or research misconduct
  • not have received already SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR funding to undertake and/or complete a doctoral degree
  • may not apply to NSERC or CIHR in same academic year
  • students can submit an application to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program in the same academic year but it must be submitted to the same agency (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC)
  • you do not need to be admitted to a doctoral program at the time of application

Selection Criteria

Academic merit as judged by:

  • past academic results (grades, awards, distinctions)
  • program of study/research and its potential contribution to the advancement of knowledge
  • relevant professional and academic experience
  • two written evaluations from referees
  • departmental appraisal

Conditions of Award

  • at time of taking up scholarship, you must be undertaking an eligible program of study in the social sciences and humanities
  • doctoral fellowships may be held at any recognized university in Canada or abroad (provided that the holder has earned at least one previous degree from a Canadian university)
  • CGS Doctoral Awards only tenable at a Canadian university
