I would like to welcome our new PhD students to the Faculty of Social Work and the PhD program, and to welcome back our returning doctoral students. The doctoral program fits within the FSW’s overall mission of facilitating the full and equitable participation of people in society, particularly those who are oppressed or marginalized, through advocating for structural social change and supporting change in individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The program’s more specific goals are to prepare our doctoral students for leadership in teaching, research, policy analysis, administration, and other forms of specialized social work practice. The PhD program provides students with opportunities for advanced scholarship and professional growth in two fields of study: Studies in Social Work Practice, and Critical Social Policy and Organizational Studies.
I trust that you will find our program to be one that stimulates your thinking, and at the same time provides appropriate support for the challenges that go with doctoral work. Our faculty members are excellent teachers, mentors and researchers whose work is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. You will also find that they represent diverse backgrounds and a broad range of interests and approaches to scholarship. I extend my best wishes as you commence or continue this exciting journey.
