The Department of English and Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University and The School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph offer a unique collaborative program in Literary Studies/Theatre Studies in English. Students can choose either Literary Studies or Theatre Studies, and have the special opportunity provided by the collaboration of the two units to do interdiscursive and interdisciplinary work across traditional disciplines.
Although students might choose to focus on either literary studies or theatre studies, the special opportunity provided by the collaboration of the programs in English at Guelph and at WLU, and the program in Drama at Guelph in a PhD in Literary Studies / Theatre Studies is its contribution to the evolution of interdisciplinary work in the humanities. The collaboration would provide opportunities that are not available in more traditional doctoral programs for interdiscursive work across the boundaries of literary and performance studies. The program will foster in students a flexibility and creativity in defining their areas and methods of research that will serve them well in an academic job market that now seldom looks for narrow specialization or coverage of a single field.
