WSIB Extended Coverage (Out of Province)

Under Section 18 of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (the Act), Ontario residents are automatically covered while working ourside of Ontario for a period of less than six months. An extension of up to three years may also be granted upon request, under Section 18(3) of the Act.
Employees who will be working outside of the province, must apply for this coverage. The procedure to ensure coverage is granted is as follows:
- The department chair must fill out the request form, providing the destination, departure date, return date, occupation, and current department.
- The completed form must be forwarded to SHERM, at least 2 weeks prior to departure.
- An application for extension must be submitted to the WSIB nearing the end of the six month automatic coverage period, but not after the expiry of the six month period. At that time, SHERM will contact the employee to confirm the extended coverage is still required, and proceed to make application to the WSIB.
- Once the approval is obtained, SHERM will notify the employee and department head.
