Laurier-YMCA moving forward
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
The Laurier-YMCA has taken another major step forward with Brantford city councilís approval for a title transfer for land on the south side of Colborne Street.
In addition, council approved a grant of up to $5.21 million to Laurier and the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford for the construction of the athletics and recreation centre.
A groundbreaking is scheduled to take place in the fall, with construction slated to last for up to 30 months. D. Grant Construction has been awarded the contract as construction manager for the site-preparation stage of the project. They previously served as the general contractor on the construction of Laurierís Research and Academic Centre.
The Laurier-YMCA will be a five-storey, 150,000-square-foot building. The facility will be a community athletics and recreation centre with gyms, a pool, fitness spaces, classrooms, offices, a lounge, meeting rooms, a cafť, and other spaces used by students and the broader community.
Total cost for the project is $58.4 million. In addition to the $5.21 million from the city of Brantford, the project has received $16.7 million from both the provincial and federal governments, and a $1-million donation from Roger and Edith Davis and from Steve and Helen Kun. The balance will come from further fundraising, the university (including $3.6-million from undergraduate students) and the YMCA.
